Background

The Foxtel Lifestyle channel aims to offer engaging content to its viewers. In the lead up to and in the spirit of the festive holiday season they looked to connect with the audience in a unique way, and an ambitious outdoor activation was planned at a prominent location in Sydney.

Brief

The task was to create a memorable holiday experience that could attract passersby and generate content for both social media and television commercials. The concept revolved around a giant, interactive snow globe installation where visitors could immerse themselves in a magical winter wonderland.

Approach

As the Art Director at Drifter, I created concepts and graphic elements of the activation and designed the UX/UI of the digital experience. The project kicked off with crafting detailed visualisation mocks to depict the envisioned setup and ambience. Key design tasks included:

Snow Globe Facade

Designing eye-catching graphics for the outer structure of the snow globe to ensure it stood out at Customs House and drew in a crowd.

Touchscreen Interface

Creating an intuitive and visually appealing digital interface that allowed visitors to control light and sound effects, enhancing their interactive experience. Developing dynamic motion graphics that were integrated with the touchscreen functionality to provide real-time visual feedback and engagement.

Solution

The final installation was a 7-meter tall snow globe placed on a plinth, designed and built by Big Kahuna. It featured falling snow effects, festive decorations, and a fully interactive digital interface. The globe was strategically placed at Customs House to maximize visibility and accessibility. Throughout the activation day, the globe served as both a photo booth for the public and a live set for filming a Christmas promo featuring talent from various shows on the Lifestyle Channel.

Results

The snow globe activation was a resounding success. It attracted a large number of visitors who actively participated by entering the globe, taking photos, and sharing their experiences on social media. This not only increased engagement rates but also generated a wealth of user-generated content. The filmed material was subsequently used in a series of TV commercials across the Foxtel Network, further amplifying the reach and impact of the campaign. As a result, the Lifestyle Channel celebrated a festive season with high viewer engagement and positive social media buzz, underlining the channel’s commitment to creating delightful and immersive experiences for its audience.
